Summary The incidence of infections which might have been caused by hospital spread among mothers and infants in the maternity clinic of Karolinska Sjukhuset was studied. The infections were of the type which were caused by S. aureus , and generally developed within three weeks after delivery. During a second period, 56% of the patients and 54% of the personnel were carriers of S. aureus . Mode of infection was studied by determination of phage and resistance patterns. The infections' epidemiology was discussed. It was probable that the infection spread occurred primarily from personnel to infants. The relatively high incidence of infections and high carrier‐rate requires prophylactic measures.
