Summary In several countries it has been possible to prove a decrease in the weight and length of the newborn during the two World Wars and the post‐war years. My investigation of the birthweight and the length of newborn infants in Sweden comprises 13,697 live‐born infants with a birthweight of more than 2,500 g. The infants were born during the periods 1918–1922 and 1938–1942. Multiple births and infants born by mothers suffering from diseases such as diabetes or toxicosis which might have affected the weight and size of the infants were excluded from the material. The investigation did not prove any statistically significant change in the weight and length of infants, at birth, during the periods studied.
