Summary The clinical and pathological features in newborn infants of diabetic mothers are in many respects the same as those in haemolytic disease of the newborn. The abnormally high level of nucleated red cells in the blood must be the consequence of increased erythropoiesis. This is assumed to be caused by an attempt of the foetus to raise its oxygen‐carrying capacity. The finding that the oxygen content in the umbilical vein is lower than in control pregnancies seems to give support to this hypothesis.
