Summary An investigation of 43 breast‐fed infants who received quantities of breast milk varying between 50 and 800 g per day, plus different kinds of supplementary foods, yielded the following results: (1) A bifidum count consistent in principle with that found in breast‐fed infants may occur as long as the quantity of breast milk ingested exceeds approximately 200 g per day. (2) The pH of the faeces will usually be higher when the amount of breast milk decreases to less than 400 g per day. (3) The nature of the supplementary food does not appear to be of fundamental importance for the maintenance of a high number of Bact. bifidum .
