SUMMARY In connection with the description of a case of congenital varices of the esophagus in a child, the author bas reviewed the literature on the subject and reached the conclusion that two or three of the previously reported cases were congenital while the others must be ruled out from this point of view. A number of criteria are set up for recognizing congenital varices of the esophagus.
