Summary. 50 children aged 4 months – 12 years 9 months suffering from clinically and roentgenologicaly verified pneumonia – 37 cases – and bronchopneumonia – 13 cases – have been treated with sulfapyridine. Irrespective of the duration of the disease before the treatment the temperature fell as a crisis or rapid lysis almost regularly within 24–48 hours, at the same time all the symptoms swiftly disappeared. All the patients recovered except a Mongolian idiot, who was ill nearly 2 weeks before the commencement of the treatment and who died in immediate connection with an operation for purulent pleuresy. The issue of the treatment was independent of the outcome of the bacteriologic examination of the throat secretion, where was found pneumococci, staphylococci, streptococci, hemolytic as well as anhemolytic either in pure cultures or several different bacterias simultaneously. The question is left open whether the bacteria found in the throat in all cases are the cause of the lung disease or not. The medication of sulfapyridine was gradually extended to 10–14 days. The considerable frequency of vomiting in sulfapyridine treated cases is emphasized.
