Summary: The etiological factors of acute epidemic poliomyelitis and acute epidemic encephalitis are or appear to be identical, namely: a filtrable virus enters via the upper air‐tract, offering hope of a physiological protective treatment. Active vaccine therapy offers an extremely encouraging prospect of practical immunization. The focal symptoms vary widely with their location and also with the severity of the lesions, hence causing a great variety in the picture presented in the different cases. A variety of palliative treatments are available. Immune sera have been highly recommended recently. A curative treatment is not yet at our command. A complete spontaneous cure takes place in some cases. The sequelae are mental derangements and various paralyses and death in a considerable percentage of severe cases.
