Summary. 1. By means of a special examination of the eye (measuring of the minimum reflexibile) performed within the first year of life we can obtain a quantitative expression for the degree of A hypovitaminosis. 2. In an instance of coeliakia a fairly severe A hypovitaminosis was revealed by this method. 3. The A vitamin contained in sweet‐milk, mashed carrots, spinach, and in a concentrated A vitamin preparation (Decamin) was not resorbed. On the other hand, after administration of mother's milk the reflex irritability of the eye against light was rapidly restored to the normal value. 4. During the hypovitaminotic stage characteristic changes of skin and hair were witnessed: yellowish‐pale complexion, driness, formation of scales, pigmentations, keratoses on the planate, the hair becoming brittle and lustreless. These phenomena disappeared as soon as the eye examination revealed normal values. 5. The reduction of the resorption of A vitamin witnessed in case of coeliakia tends to suggest that this disease is a manifestation of an affection in the reticulo‐endothelial system.
