Melanocytic nevi are by far the most common benign neoplasms of the skin in the white population. They usually occur multiply in adults. Congenital and acquired and among these common and atypical melanocytic nevi are differentiated. The number of melanocytic nevi is an indication of the risk of development of melanomas, and melanocytic nevi can be precursors of melanoma.
