An F 1 hybrid between the two cultivated rice species Oryza glaberrima and O. sativa ssp. japonica was backcrossed with four O. sativa accessions. Nine to 34 plants were studied for their fertility and morphological traits. The fertility of all the plants was very low, since only one of the 74 plants produced seeds. Associations of morphological traits were similar in the four progenies. Plants with panicle traits of O. sativa and tillering ability of O. glaberrima could be bred.
