The present case of P(S)C investigated in Ranunculus acris L. was shown to be closely correlated with a certain S ‐allele, but otherwise obviously a quantitative character, controlled in the style. Pseudo‐compatibility (PC) exceeds pseudo‐self‐compatibility (PSC), phenomena that are regarded as an effect of the same failure in the function of the incompatibility mechanism. P(S)C in individuals obtained through PC further exceeds that of individuals obtained through PSC and the PSC‐degree decreases by inbreeding. No definite hypothesis as to the cause of P(S)C in this species is proposed, but the correspondence with other systems is discussed. It should be remembered that R. acris has an incompatibility system with gametophytic pollen control, performed by at least four co‐operating S‐ loci.
