A lanen , M. 1986. Drosophila hydei polytene chromosomes: Investigation of the chromosome ends by whole mount electron microscopy.‐ Hereditas 104: 85–89. Lund, Sweden. ISSN 0018–0661. Received March 11, 1985 Whole mount electron microscopy reveals structural differences between chromatin in the proximal ends and the distal ends of polytene chromosome arms of Drosophila hydei. The chromocenter appears as an indeterminate fusion product of proximal chromosome ends with no superstructure evident. The telomeric area, which is formed by the contact of distal chromosome ends, consists of structures resembling the structural units forming the polytene chromosome bands.
