L inde ‐L aursen , I. 1984. Giemsa C‐banding of barley chromosomes. IV. Chromosomal constitution of autotetraploid barley.— Hereditas 100 : 219–223. Lund, Sweden. ISSN 0018–0661. Received June 29, 1983 The progeny of an autotetraploid barley plant (C 1 ) consisted of 45 tetraploids and 33 aneuploids. Giemsa C‐banding was used to identify each of the chromosomes in 20 euploid and 31 aneuploid C 2 ‐ ‐ seedlings, and in 11 C 3 ‐ ‐ offspring of aneuploid C 2 ‐ ‐ plants. The euploid C 2 ‐ ‐ seedlings all had four homologues of each of the chromosomes. The aneuploid C 2 ‐ ‐ seedlings were fairly equally distributed on hypo‐and hyperploids, and on the seven chromosome groups. This suggests that a particular chromosome is lost or gained at random in gametes and embryos. The 11 C 3 ‐ ‐ seedlings comprised seven true euploids, one seedling with 2n=28 having an extra chromosome 6 and missing one chromosome 3, and three seedlings with 2n=29. The chromosomal composition of aneuploid C 3 ‐ ‐ seedlings did not reflect that of their aneuploid C 2 ‐ ‐ parents with respect to missing or extra chromosomes. Two hypohexaploid C 2 ‐ ‐ seedlings came from apperently “empty” seeds, suggesting that some sterility of tetraploid barley is due to “triploidy”.
