The pattern of heteromorphisms in the C‐band positive constitutive heterochromatin of chromosomes Nos. 1, 9, and 16 was studied in peripheral lymphocytes from 148 randomly selected healthy blood donors: 78 from Lund, Sweden, and 70 from Paris, France. The parameters of the heterochromatic regions analyzed were relative size, symmetry‐asymmetry within homologous pairs, and incidence of inversions. Significant differences between the two populations were found in C‐band size of all three chromosomes studied, viz. 1, 9, and 16, in the distribution of symmetry‐asymmetry within chromosome pair No. 16, and in the incidence of inversions in chromosome No. 9.
