An electron microscopic analysis of thin sections of squashed salivary gland chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster shows a total of 295 bands for the divisions 6 through 10 of X. The number is in good agreement with the one dzpicted by B ridges in the revised reference map for these divisions. Only 60 of the one hundred double bands drawn by B ridges can be interpreted to be doublets also in the electron micrographs. Twenty‐two of B ridges ' doublets seem to be singlets, and the remaining 18 of Bridges' double bands are made up of two separate single bands with a distinct interband in between. A total of 23 new, in general very faint bands have been detected in the electron micrographs of divisions 6 through 10 of X. Some problems related to the structural and functional organization of chromomeres were discussed.
