Mouse ascites cells growing in vitro as suspension culture or in vivo as an ascites tumor (K arzel , K., Med. Pharmacol. Exp. 12 , 137, 1965) were analyzed cytogenetically after G‐ and C‐banding. Tetraploid stemline numbers (S = 80 in vivo, S = 81 in vitro) correspond to an increase of about 50% in the average DNA content as compared to hyperdiploid ascites tumors. The comparison of the almost congruent karyotypes of in vivo and in vitro grown ascites cells with those of earlier investigated Ehrlich‐Lettré ascites tumor sublines justifies the designations ELT (Ehrlich‐Lettré tetraploid ascites cell strain) Bonn for the in vitro strain and ELT Bonn ascites tumor subline for its in vivo counterpart.
