Exposure systems for studies of the effects of electromagnetic fields on biological systems

Exposure systems for studies of biological effects of electromagnetic fields have been developed. The systems were designed for four different exposures: 27.12 MHz CW electric field, 27.12 MHz CW magnetic field, 2.45 GHz CW EM far field and 3.1 GHz pulsed EM far field. Ten‐milliliter temperature‐controlled sample containers were designed. The differences between the temperatures of the exposed samples and the non‐exposed control samples were measured to be less than ± 0.3±C. The specific absorption rate SAR in the exposed samples were in the range 0.35–0.70 W/kg for microwaves normalized to an incident power density of 1 mW/cm 2 . For 27.12 MHz the SAR values were up to 20 W/kg for 20 A/m magnetic fields and about 3 W/kg for electric fields (field‐strength in air 10 kV/m). The equipment has proven suitable for genetic tests performed with bacteria and embryos of Drosophila melanogaster .
