The localization of SCEs was studied by simultaneous treatment of V79‐E cells with netropsin‐HCl and BUdR. The SCEs occurred in a non‐random pattern, but no clear‐cut correlation of SCEs and C‐band heterochromatin or dAdT‐clusters, resp., was observed. BUdR substitution completely abolishes the differential elongation pattern of chromosomes obtained after in vitro treatment with netropsin alone, but does not prevent an overall chromosome elongation. Netropsin enforces the unequal stretching of sister chromatids produced by BUdR.
