Condensation of mouse C‐heterochromatin is inhibited in cells of established mouse lines if treated with 33258 Hoechst. The fact that after such treatment these regions appear in mitotic chromosomes as longthreaded segments enabled us to localize, with the silver staining technique, the NORs outside the C‐heterochromatin. The number of NORs per cell and their identification was determined.
