Identification of the individual chromosomes in the rye variety “Stålråg” and in two inbred lines of rye was carried out by means of the Giemsa C‐banding technique and related to earlier investigations. Heterochromatin polymorphism occurs between plants and between homologues. Possible explanations of the variability of the banding pattern are discussed. Grouping of heterochromatic regions at interphase and fused telomeres at prophase were observed and discussed.
