Starch gel electrophoresis in three buffers was used to assay 21 enzyme systems in the two butterfly species Aricia agestis and A. artaxerxes . 16 enzymes showed activity when stained for, but no absolute interspecific difference was found in the patterns. Methods for a statistical, interpopulational comparison of multiple allelic systems have been discussed. On basis of allozyme variation in three enzymes it has been shown that the two species are very close sibling species.
