A multidimensional model useful in selection experiments involving mutant materials is described. A number of quantitative variables are combined to one single synthetic variable reflecting positive qualities of the original variables. The technique employed is related to mean square orthogonal regression. The obtained positive results are partially due to fortuitous data in the specific case analysed, pertaining to mutant selections in Svalöv's Foma barley, cultivated at Risö (Denmark). The synthetic device has been further utilized in multidimensional analyses of phytotron‐cultivated barley materials.
