The distribution of chromatid‐breakage points along human chromosomes was studied in lymphocytes irradiated with X‐rays during the G 2 ‐period. The breakage points were found to be preferentially located in the R‐bands. This has also been shown for breakage points in exchange aberrations obtained after irradiation in the G 0 stage. However, chromosomes with relatively large amounts of R‐band material (showing a high frequency of exchange aberrations when irradiated during the G 0 stage) appeared to be underrepresented with regard to chromatid breakage points when irradiated during the G 2 stage and contrariwise. A possible mechanism that would account for this inverse relationship is discussed.
