By means of thin‐layer chromatography 33 varieties of barley were investigated. Three distinctly different flavonoid patterns were found, named A, B and C. The three patterns have a very wide geographical distribution. The pattern named C was only found in varieties from Ethiopia. The genetic and phylogenetic aspects of these chemical races were discussed. The glycoflavonoids which may constitute these differences were briefly presented.
