The frequency of the blood group p was studied in a series of about 40,000 individuals from the county of Västerbotten in northern Sweden. The frequency of the p gene was calculated with different methods to be about 1 per cent for the whole county and somewhat higer in the coastal area. The frequency of the p blood group may be about 70 times higher in northern Sweden than in other parts of the world. This high frequency is not due to ethnic heterogeneity or inbreeding but most likely to the founder effect and genetic drift.
