Phenolic compounds from leaves of 2‐month old plants of 17 varieties of barley were investigated by means of thin‐layer chromatography. Eighteen spots (out of a total of about 50) were used as marker spots. The 17 varieties constitute parental lines to 20 varieties previously investigated. The latter were classified in two groups (A and B) on the basis of differences with respect to the same set of marker spots as above. The classification of the 17 varieties into Groups A and B proved consistent with that of the 20 varieties in all relationships but two.
