Q‐banding and C‐banding techniques as well as tritiated thymidine autoradiography were used to characterise the heterochromatin of Rhoeo discolor. The heterochromatin which is situated around the centromere in all the 12 chromosomes, is brightly fluorescent, strongly stainable with Giemsa, following denaturation and renaturation, as well as late replicating. Utilizing these techniques, the behaviour of the heterochromatic segments during male meiosis was studied. The role of heterochromatin in the pairing organization of multivalents are discussed.
