Beets of the white mangel strain, Gartons White Knight, have normal dominant colour genes at the R ‐ and G ‐loci. They do not express themselves because White Knight carries a recessive gene, p , the normal allele of which, P , is indispensable for colour formation. The P ‐gene is carried by most beet strains. The P ‐locus is closely linked to the two colour gene loci R and G . The white mangel strain, Gartons White Chief, has the same genotype for colour as Gartons White Knight, ppRRGG .
