Barley seeds were treated with iPMS. The size of the mutated sector was investigated by the aid of waxy pollen mutants. The mean sector size was estimated to 17.3 per cent, which is a low value compared to the data from earlier experiments with EMS and Y‐rays. The transmission to the following generation of the induced waxy mutants was investigated. Only three out of 24 mutations were transmitted. The mutated sector following iPMS treatment was also investigated by the aid of chlorophyll mutants in the third generation. No support for the hypothesis that mutational events are unevenly distributed after iPMS treatment was obtained in this investigation.
