Regional variations and temporal trends in matrimonial migration distances were studied in the county of Västerbotten, Northern Sweden. No significant increase of migration distances was found between 1900 and 1930, while between 1930 and 1960 the average migration distances were doubled. This increase in the average matrimonial migration distance was due to an increased frequency of long distance migrations, while short distance migrations decreased and endogamous matings were largely unaltered in frequency. Significant differences were found between the western (mountaineous) and eastern (coastal) areas with respect to the distributions of migration distances.
