The three skate species, Raja batis, Raja clavata and Raja radiata have been studied cytologically together with the shark species Squalus acanthias. The Raja species all have the same chromosome number, 2n = 98, while the Squalus species has 2n = 62. In the meiosis only bivalents are found in both genera, viz. 49 bivalents in Raja and 31 in Squalus. The variation in chromosome size is considerable in all species studied.
