The somatic resistance to X‐ray irradiation was studied in larvae from an isogenic wild type stock of Drosophila melanogaster. In a population, larvae of twelve successive generations were irradiated at the age of 20±4 hours with a dose of 1120 R at an intensity of 80 R per min. Larval resistance to radiation was mainly studied at doses of 1120, 1400 and 1800 R. The data support the conclusion that larvae from series irradiated with 1120 R in earlier generations have greater somatic resistance than larvae from control series. Further tests are being performed to elucidate possible mechanisms which may be responsible for somatic resistance.
