Family data from Iceland are reported, showing the rates of hospitalization with psychosis in different classes of relatives of index cases diagnosed schizophrenic, manic depressive, or psychotic depressive. The data are analyzed in terms of the probable mode of transmission for schizophrenia and are felt to fit best a mechanism requiring two separate dominant genes. Calculated rates for various relatives based on this model are compared to the empiric values.
