The objective of this study was to assess undergraduate students' ability to obturate the apical third of the root canal of human maxillary incisors using the standardized technique and the step back technique as taught in the undergraduate curriculum. Twenty‐six students prepared and obturated the canals of 104 extracted teeth to a given working length. The teeth were coated with nail varnish to prevent leakage and incubated for 2 wk at 37°C in Procion Brilliant Red before being evaluated for linear leakage. Adaptation of root fillings was assessed at 0.5 mm intervals from the apex in every case. There was significantly more leakage with poor adaptation when students used the step back technique compared to the standardized technique. Overfilling frequently occurred with the former method and never with the latter.
