Human pulpal response to composite resin restorations

Composite resin restorations were placed in experimentally prepared cavities in human teeth. Various antibacterial regimens were used and the pulpal responses were studied and correlated with presence of bacteria on the cavity walls. Presence of bacteria seemed to be an important, but not the only reason for harmful pulpal responses. Good pulp protection was obtained by using a calcium hydroxide‐containing base material after acid etching of cavities was carried out. The present results were compared with those from an identical study in monkeys, and good correlation was found.
