A recent analysis of T cells in the arterial wall of cardiac transplant recipients with graft vasculopathy demonstrates effector memory CD4+ T cells, some of which bear the senescent CD28 null phenotype. This observation begs the question whether chronically activated CD4+ T cells may be directly damaging to the vessel wall. See also article by Hagemeijer et al in this issue on page 1040.
