A study population of 20 patients exhibiting a wide range of severity of inflammation were examined using the Periodontal Index (PI) and the Gingival Index (GI). Two examiners, an epidemiologist and a periodontist were provided with a reading list of the relevant literature on the two indices and ample discussion time, but were not allowed to engage in clinical calibration sessions prior to the beginning of the examinations. The results showed higher GI and PI scores obtained by the epidemiologist when compared with the scores obtained by the periodontist. High correlation coefficients were found between the GI and PI scores for both examiners. The results obtained indicate that with limited calibration between examiners, a high correlation was found when the Periodontal Index or the Gingival Index were used, even though the absolute results fluctuate widely. In order to avoid misinterpretation of tissue appearance by a second examiner, the order of examination in pilot studies conducted to assess inter‐examiner agreement should be randomly switched between examiners.
