It is proposed that the physiological behaviour of the dental follicle and perodontal membrane is explicable, on theoretical grounds, as having the characteristics fo a thixotropic gel. If the collagen “fibres” of soft connective tissue as seen in fixed specimens area accepted as the static appearance of a dynamic system, i.e. artefacts of fixation, then the physiologicla behaviour of theis collagenous tissue and the eruption of teeth may be explained in simple terms by changes in the viscosity of this biological system.
