Mast cell population density was determined for the gingiva of the golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus). Using thirty normal, untreated hamsters, equal males and females, the population density was found to be ca 5,200 mast cells per cubic millimeter. The counts had high precision. The method of counting mast cells was explained, and its utility noted. The relation of mast cells to oral disease was discussed.
