Normal and orchidectomized rats were injected on alternate days with 10 mg of testosterone propionate for 20 days in order to study the effect of the hormone on both the distribution and the rate of synthesis of glycosaminoglycans in gingiva. Testosterone exerts a very specific effect on the acidic GAG by increasing the hyaluronic acid concentration about twice. The sulfated fractions do nor appear to be affected. The above increase is probably due to an augmentation of synthesis of hyaluronate. as evidended by an increased uptake of C 14 ‐acetate by this fraction.
