Different test solutions moved 2.5–2.9 times faster on Munktell's filter paper no. 3 than on Whatman filter paper no. 1. The paper quality may thas be an important factor when measuring gingival exudatc by the filter paper method, and results obtained with different types of paper may not be comparable. Upon descending chromatography a 30–50 per cent increase was found in mobility as compared to ascending chromatograpiiy, indicating that gingival exudate measurements may be influenced by the flow direction.
