The effect of time of day, eating since the teeth were last brushed, and the number of stained teeth in smokers, on the Oral Debris Index (Greene and Vermillion 1960) was examined. The effects were found to be non‐significant. Increased frequency of toothbrushing was found to produce a statistically significant reduction in oral debris.
