Epithelial mitotic activity after gingivectomy

Healing of gingivectomy wounds at the palatal surfaces of rat molars was stadied after administration of tritiated thymidine and subsequent radioautography. The objective was to determine levels of epithelial mitotic activity in relation to the previously ascertained timing of reattachment. It was concluded that the return of mitotic activity to normal levels coincides with reattachment of epithelium to the tooth surface. Possible reasons for the lag between epithelial closure of the wound and reattachment to the tooth are discussed.
