Measurements of alveolar bone resorption were made on radiographs of 28 Anglo‐Saxon and 46 17th. century mandibles. The amount of resorption was found to be significantly greater in the mandibles of the 17th. century than in those of the Anglo‐Saxon period, this difference being most pronounced in the region of the 2nd. premolar tooth. Changes in diet, particularly in its physical consistency, are suggested as the main factors in this increase in alveolar bone loss.
