After the systemic administration of histamine it was found that whilst almost no reaction occurred in the dento‐gingival blood vessels of healthy gingivae, the same dose of histamine caused abnormal permeability in chronically inflamed gingivae. This was observed as the formation of gingival fluid and, using the vascular labelling method, by labelling of the vessels with heavy deposits of carbon. This indicates that the blood vessels of chronically inflamed gingiva are more liable to show an increase of permeability than the vessels of clinically healthy gingiva.
