Ignoring the dynamics of the first reading in relation to further readings takes away from the literary text a vital element of its mode of existence. An interpretive approach which has its starting point in the assumption of the text existing at its ‘arrived’ state fossilizes it and so deprives it of a meaning potential of essential significance. This essay argues the need for taking into consideration the relationship between first and further readings for purposes of interpretative practice and, in consequence, for the phenomenology of the literary text.
