This article attempts to connect the psychoanalytical theory of literature with the structural and semiotic approaches to the literary text. The link between these approaches is the role of repetition in literature. It is argued that repetition is related to the psychoanalytical concept on the one hand, and on the other that repetition and parallelism are founding structural principles of literature. The relevance of the semiotic concept of the icon as a bridge between these approaches to literature is explored, and the role of repetition on the phonological, narratological, and thematic levels of the literary text is exemplified.
