This article attempts to re‐define the terms of debate surrounding the socio‐historical, political, aesthetic, and philosophical significance of the Impressionist movement in turn‐of‐the‐century Vienna. It calls into question the adequacy of the traditional paradigm of crisis and argues that the Jung Wien movement may be viewed as an attempt by the Austro‐German elite to fashion a form of cultural monism that complemented the political move of the Habsburg monarchy to preserve its empire.
