Given the recent and increasing attention which has been accorded the use of the diary in narrative, I have undertaken a survey of diary fiction, organized by the three principle areas ‐ mimetic, thematic, and temporal ‐ in which the diary strategy can create a distinct functional advantage. My framing argument is that diary fiction is best conceived not as genre but as fiction employing a particular narrative device. This allows us to demonstrate the flexibility of the device and the rich diversity of ends it has been made to serve.
