The English version of Goldschmidt's novel Hjemløs has been regarded as merely the product of a professional translator. an examination of Goldschmidt's published letters and unpublished diaries demonstrates, however, that it is his own work, and that he thoroughly revised the novel in English, with his cousin's wife working as his editor. A comparison of the English and Danish versions reveals that the English revision has a tighter structure, sharper focus on the central character, and more concentrated narrative. the English Homeless; or, a Poet's Inner Life belongs to the body of Goldschmidt's original work and thus enlarges Goldschmidt's place in world literature.
